Kasumiga pearls are certainly not a household name. Freshwater pearl farming was once a thriving industry in Japan that nearly succumbed to extinction by pollution in the 1970s. The Japanese resurrected pearl cultivation in Lake Kasumigaura - Japan's second-largest freshwater lake - over a decade ago. The result, large pearls in soft pinks to bronzy purples.
