As early as 2800 years ago, this intensely blue stone was mined in Afghanistan and enjoyed as jewelry in ancient Egypt and in Neolithic cultures. In the Renaissance, lapis powder was used for pigment in the most exalted paintings, its ultramarine color highly prized and very costly.
